Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a public vigil that could facilitate a potential flight.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the facility tracking Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His child, Flávio, who serves as a legislator, called for a assembly of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your country, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to fight with us."
He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the judge's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The court filing emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is located around 13km from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being held in a national police facility in the capital and will experience a detention review on Sunday.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the his legal team asked the Top Court to allow him to complete his entire prison term under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict
Bolsonaro was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he lost the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his VP candidate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was thwarted because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his backers attacked and damaged government buildings in the federal district, the capital city.
The police intervened and around 1,500 people were arrested.
The justices found that the rioters had been incited by him whose strategy, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.
The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
