Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Jabs Regain Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that individuals who come off blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a major medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals using such treatments need to be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Weighing Treatments

The study, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the jabs explain a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you become starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined behavioural support.
